Things you need to know about Namings

Baby Namings and Renewals of Vows are not covered by legislation and so anyone with the necessary knowledge and skills may be chosen to design and perform such ceremonies. Civil Marriage Celebrants, because of their professional expertise and experience, are often chosen to facilitate such ceremonies.

These ceremonies welcome your child into your family, circle of friends and the wider community. This can be in addition to or as an alternative to a Christening. Some parents have a Christening for immediate family and a Naming for wider family and social networks.
A Naming Ceremony provides an opportunity to welcome the new child, celebrates her or his name and acknowledges the parenting responsibilities of the couple, god-parents (or guardians, special people, mentors….) grandparents and others at the venue of your choice.

Namings for babies and young children can perform all the non-religious functions of a Christening. These include:· Celebration of a new life among us · Commitment to the love and care of the child by both parents and nominated “special people”· Offering of blessings, good wishes and good will for the child’s journey through life· A rite of passage for the parents and the child· Celebration of a name chosen out of love and the invitation for the child to make this name its ownSome parents would prefer their child to have the opportunity of choosing their own religion later in life. A Naming Ceremony allows the child to be christened later should he or she so choose. Occasionally Namings are used by adults wishing to change their name for important personal reasons.
